Airstream Basecamp REI Co-op Special Edition FAQ
What are the dimensions of an Airstream Basecamp REI?
The Airstream Basecamp REI Co-op Special Edition is available in two different floor plans: the 16X and the 20X. Here's how they measure up:
Basecamp REI 16X
- Exterior Length: 16 feet 2 inches
- Exterior Width: 7 feet
- Exterior Height (with A/C): 9 feet
- Interior Width: 6 feet 4.5 inches
- Interior Height: 6 feet 3.5 inches
Basecamp REI 20X
- Exterior Length: 20 feet 2 inches
- Exterior Width: 7 feet 9.5 inches
- Exterior Height (with A/C): 9 feet 5 inches
- Interior Width: 7 feet 2.5 inches
- Interior Height: 6 feet 7 inches
The 16X works great for couples or solo adventurers who want something lightweight and easy to tow. The 20X provides four additional feet of space, which is perfect for families or groups who need more room for meals, sleeping, and gear storage.
How many people does an Airstream Basecamp REI sleep?
The sleeping capacity varies based on which floor plan you select:
The Basecamp REI 16X sleeps two people comfortably. The rear benches (24 inches x 76 inches each) can be converted into a full bed that measures 76 inches by 76 inches. If you prefer, you can create a half bed (38 inches x 76 inches) and keep one side set up as seating space.
The Basecamp REI 20X sleeps up to four people. The front U-shaped dinette converts into sleeping space for two, and the rear benches (26 inches x 78 inches each) also transform into sleeping areas. You can set up the rear as two single beds, a half bed (41 inches x 78 inches), or a full bed (82 inches x 78 inches).
Both floor plans feature Knoll fabric upholstery made from 50% post-consumer recycled materials. The fabric includes a stain-resistant finish that holds up well to outdoor activities and adventure gear.
What kind of vehicle do I need to tow an Airstream Basecamp REI?
Both Basecamp REI models can be towed by many mid-size SUVs and light trucks. Here are the important numbers:
Basecamp REI 16X Towing Requirements
- Unit Base Weight: 2,700 pounds (with LP and batteries)
- GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): 3,500 pounds
Basecamp REI 20X Towing Requirements
- Unit Base Weight: 3,500 pounds (with LP and batteries)
- GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): 4,300 pounds
Your tow vehicle should have a towing capacity that goes beyond the GVWR. For the 16X, we recommend at least 4,000 pounds of towing capacity. For the 20X, we recommend at least 5,000 pounds of towing capacity for safe operation. Many popular SUVs like the Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer, and mid-size trucks can handle these weights.
You'll also need a weight distribution hitch for safe towing. Both models include a powered hitch jack as standard equipment to make hookup easier. Always check your vehicle's owner's manual for its specific towing capacity. If you need help determining if your vehicle is a good match for this trailer, the team at Airstream of Tampa is ready to assist you.

What is the learning curve for owning an Airstream Basecamp REI?
The learning curve for owning an Airstream Basecamp REI is quite manageable, even for first-time RV owners. While there are definitely things to learn, most new owners feel at ease within their first few camping trips.
When you purchase from Airstream of Tampa, you'll receive a detailed delivery walkthrough that covers all the systems and features. We recommend planning your first trip to a campground within a two or three-hour drive from home. This allows you to get familiar with your trailer in a comfortable environment without the pressure of a long journey.
Key areas to focus on include:
- Setting up and leveling your trailer at the campsite
- Connecting utilities including electric, water, and sewer
- Understanding the power system and battery monitoring
- Operating the water purification system
- Basic maintenance tasks like checking sealants and tire pressure
- Winterization and de-winterization procedures
The Basecamp REI Co-op Special Edition includes features that make RV ownership easier. Powered stabilizer jacks and a powered hitch jack reduce the physical work involved in setup. The recirculating water heater delivers instant hot water while conserving resources. The UV-LED water filtration system provides clean drinking water directly from your fresh water tank.
Airstream offers extensive online resources through Airstream Academy, featuring videos, articles, and answers to frequently asked questions. Additionally, every new Airstream includes three years of Coach-Net 24/7 roadside assistance, giving you peace of mind wherever you travel.
Most owners find that while the first outing involves a learning process, by the second or third trip, everything begins to feel second nature. The important thing is to give yourself patience and remember that every Airstreamer was once in your shoes.
Does owning an Airstream Basecamp REI make sense living in Florida?
Absolutely! Florida is a fantastic state for Airstream ownership, and the Basecamp REI Co-op Special Edition is particularly well-suited for Florida adventures.
Camping Seasons: Florida offers year-round camping opportunities thanks to its warm climate. While summers can be hot and humid, spring, fall, and winter provide excellent camping weather with comfortable temperatures. Many Florida RVers find that fall through spring is the ideal camping season, with cooler evenings and plenty of sunshine. Winter camping in Florida is especially popular when northern states are dealing with snow and ice.
Outdoor Activities: Florida features three national parks, countless state parks, and over 1,300 miles of coastline. The Basecamp REI's compact size makes it easy to navigate Florida's diverse campgrounds, from beachside spots along the Gulf Coast to inland locations near natural springs and the Everglades. With the X-Package included as standard, both models can handle sandy roads and trails that lead to some of Florida's best coastal and backcountry camping areas.
Equipment Features: The Basecamp REI Co-op Special Edition comes equipped for Florida's climate. The dual air conditioning system keeps you cool during warm days and nights. The optional 360-watt solar package with lithium batteries is great for beach camping and boondocking in remote natural areas. The UV-LED water filtration system and recirculating water heater help conserve water, which is important during dry season camping. The enclosed, insulated underbelly protects your systems during occasional cold snaps in winter.
Local Convenience: With Airstream of Tampa located in Dover, you have local service and support nearby. This makes routine maintenance, repairs, and upgrades convenient throughout your ownership. Our team knows the local camping scene and can recommend great spots to explore throughout the Tampa Bay area and beyond.
Storage Considerations: Florida's humid climate means proper storage is important when your trailer isn't in use. Many Florida owners store their trailers under covers or in climate-controlled facilities to protect against moisture, sun damage, and salt air exposure in coastal areas. Regular maintenance of seals and exterior surfaces helps protect your investment in Florida's environment.
The Basecamp REI's build quality, including its hand-riveted aluminum shell and quality insulation, makes it well-suited for Florida's subtropical climate. From beach camping on the Gulf Coast to exploring the Keys to inland adventures in state forests, this Airstream is built for Florida exploration.
